It’s easy to get around Beijing. The subway system is extensive, cheap, and easy to use. Taxis are plentiful — and also very cheap.
Unless it’s raining or late at night, you’ll probably find it very easy to get a taxi. Few drivers speak English, and they probably won’t understand your Chinese pronunciation, so make sure you’ve got where you’re going written down. Just so you’re aware, many do not know how to read a map, and you might wonder if they even know how to read. Yes, it can be frustrating. But if you’re good natured, friendly, and patient, it should all work out. Be aware that there is an extra 2 yuan gasoline surcharge added to the fare.
The subway can be crowded, but it cuts through the traffic and gets you where you want to go quickly and relatively easily. Only costs 2 yuan.
