Ladies and Gentlemen, There Will Be a Slight Delay. And One, And Two, And Three…

Passengers on a recent delayed flight from Beijing to Macau got a rare treat, and it wasn't extra peanuts.

On board were members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who were heading from our fair city to the final concert of a two-week China tour in Macau, the 40th anniversary of their first China tour in 1973. When the captain announced that their flight would be delayed due to inclement weather, the orchestra decided a little music was in order, and not from their iPods.

We’re Waiting On You Guoson: Vacant Dongzhimen Mall Still Vacant

Beijing certainly has no shortage of ghostly malls and office buildings, but the absence of life in the Guoson Center right next to the bustling Dongzhimen subway station has always been puzzling. Its brothers Raffles and Ginza across the street are overachievers, comparatively, but to get there from the airport express, you have to cross through an underpass that reeks of boiled corn. There are worse things in life, but, really, Guoson, why don't you get on it already?

Before the Flood: Beijing Makes Improvements to Warning System

I navigated around puddles for a 20 minute walk this morning only to reach Wanda Plaza and find it covered in a solid layer of water, like a melted ice skating rink. Needless to say, my canvas shoes are soaked.

Still, today's rain is nothing compared to some of the downpours we saw last year, like the record breaking storm that killed more than 70 people. In anticipation of another season of heavy rain, the city put in place new measures last week to warn citizens of flooding before it happens.

Beidaihe Ranked #60 on CNN’s list of World’s Best Beaches (but WTF?)

CNN posits, "Is it possible to rank the world's beaches?" and responds with a resounding "Of course it is, this is the internet!" in their list of "The World's 100 Best Beaches."

Beidaihe – the historic Northern China beach resort located about 253 km (or 2.5 hours by fast train) from Beijing – comes in at #60:

"Beidaihe has been pleasing China's upper crust for decades. A few hours from Beijing, Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping hashed out national policies in private villas here. The area remains popular among Russian tourists – a reminder of erstwhile Sino-Soviet ties. Highlight: Beidaihe's restaurants offer simple pleasures, mostly good seafood and cold beer."

Hmmm ... I'm all for reppin' that beifang pride but last time I was up in Beidaihe it looked like this:
